Real Madrid v Chelsea Match Preview Wednesday 12th April 2023

Frank Lampard Chelsea manager

🕗 Wednesday 12th April, 20:00 GMT

Wednesday night, in the Champions League sees Real Madrid take on Chelsea in the 1st leg of the quarter-finals, at the Santiago Bernabeu Stadium. The Spanish side will be looking to take the lead into the second leg, which will take place at Stamford Bridge next Tuesday.

Head to head

Previously we have seen these two teams face each other in 2022 in the quarter-finals of the Champions League. Real Madrid came out on top on that occasion where we saw Benzema score the winner in extra time in the second leg, to win the game 5-4 on aggregate.

Real Madrid's form

Real Madrid have recently picked up form but it looks likely that it will be too late to catch Barcelona as Barca sit twelve points clear at the top of La Liga. In the previous round of the Champions League, Real Madrid emphatically beat Liverpool, where they annihilated them 6-2 on aggregate over the two games. In La Liga, Real Madrid have previously gone on a brilliant run of form and have only lost two games of their previous eight games in the league.

Chelsea’s form

In the Premier League this season, Chelsea are now sitting 11th in the league and will be hoping to pick up form under the reappointment of Frank Lampard. In their previous 10 Premier League games, Chelsea have only managed to pick up two wins, which is massively underperforming after spending £323 million in the January transfer window. In the previous round of the Champions League, Chelsea took care of Dortmund. They turned round a 1-0 deficit from the first leg to win 2-0 at Stamford Bridge and win the tie 2-1 on aggregate.

Key players

Real Madrid’s star man is Vinicius Junior. The Brazilian has had fifteen goal contributions this season, scoring nine goals and has also provided six assists. Vinicius has also scored six goals this season in the Championship League so far. Real Madrid’s star man also has the pace and dribbling abilities to dance through any defence.

For Chelsea, they need Joao Felix to have an impact to ensure Chelsea have an increased chance of winning this tough tie. Chelsea fans will be hoping that Frank Lampard brings the best out of the Portuguese man and will be looking for him to start scoring more goals and providing the team with more assists. Joao Felix can carry the ball and is a brilliant technical player and he has the ability to become one of the best players in the world in the coming years.

Real Madrid’s top goalscorer this season has been the goal-scoring machine in the form of Karim Benzema. The French striker has always had a colossal impact on Real Madrid and could score from any range, so Chelsea’s defence needs to be wary of the threat that he poses. Benzema has scored 14 La Liga goals this season and has also provided his teammates with a handful of assists.
