Manchester United’s chance of winning the league
In recent weeks many people including ex professionals and pundits have ruled Manchester United out of the title race but what are the chances of them winning the league?
There is no disagreement that Man United’s performances have not been upto the standard required for the size and expectations of the club.
United have only managed 1 victory and 1 draw in their last 5 Premier League fixtures.
Defeats against Aston Villa, Leicester and Liverpool have resulted in the red side of Manchester finding themselves out of the Champions League places.
As a result of recent performances huge pressure has been piled upon Ole Gunnar Solskjaer with many calling for him to lose his job.
After the humiliating defeat to arch rivals Liverpool there were wide reports that Ole’s future was being discussed by the hierarchy at the club.
But reports suggest these conversations have led to Solskjaer being given 3 games to save his job by drastically improving performances and gaining results.
The first of the 3 games was away at The Tottenham Hotspur Stadium followed up by a away trip to Italy to face Atalanta in the UEFA Champions League and then the big Derby on Saturday at home against Manchester City.
Off the back of the criticism heaped on him, Solskjaer changed the way of playing and personnel for the trip to Spurs.
The change in formation saw Varane, Maguire and Lindelof play as a back 3 with Fred and McTominay playing in front of them.
As a result of the tweak of the system it was evident for all to see that United looked more like a team rather than a bunch of individual players.
In previous games it seemed easy to play through the lines and get at the defense of United but this wasn’t the case when they played Tottenham.
As well as looking strong defensively United wide range of attacking options produced on the pitch. Goals from the newly fledged strike partnership of Edinson Cavani and Cristiano Ronaldo gave the Red Devils a 2-0 lead.
Marcus Rashford also managed to get onto the scoresheet coming off the bench to complete a 3-0 victory, to further show the quality United have at their disposal.
But despite having the attacking talent of the likes of Marcus Rashford, Jadon Sancho, Mason Greenwood, Cristiano Ronaldo and Edinson Cavani why are Manchester United not top of the league?
Many believe that the ability of the manager is holding back the capabilities of this squad.
Names such as Antonio Conte and Zinedine Zadine have been rumored as the potential replacements if Ole was to lose his job, one of them can now be ruled out with Conte taking the helm at Tottenham.
People within the game believe that with a manager of Conte’s and Zidane’s quality they would without a doubt be challenging for the Premier League.
Players such as Dutch international Donny Van De Beek and Englishman Jason Sancho look to be out of favour with the current manager and with the new system it looks even harder for Sancho to get into the team.
There is no denying that Ole Gunnar Solskjaer is reluctant to play Donny Van De Beek and several pundits have questioned the manager’s ability to manage big names in the dressing room and believe that other managers would get the best out of the squad as a whole.
In their next Premier League fixture, Man United welcome Manchester City to Old Trafford in what seems to be a massive game which could determine Solskjaer’s future.
The players and fans of United will be hoping that the game doesn’t take the same path as their previous home game against Liverpool which saw them battered 5-0.
A win or draw could see Ole Gunnar Solskjaer remain in the job for a little while longer but a defeat could see Solskjaer’s time as boss at Old Trafford come to an end.
In the 8 games in which Solskjaer has come up against Pep Guardiola he has come out on top with the victory on 4 occasions. He will be hoping this is the case again this weekend to silence the critics and relieve the intense pressure on him.
You wouldn’t back against Man United to gain victory against City because any time Solskjaer has been in the firing line this set of players seem to pull him out of the mud with a performance and most importantly a victory.
It is widely believed that United’s title challenge is over for another year already.
After 10 league games United find themselves placed in 5th position 8 points behind the leaders Chelsea.
With the form of teams above United such as Liverpool and Chelsea at the minute it is difficult to see how they can reduce this point gap and close the distance in order to climb to the top of the table.
However numerous United fans are not ruling out their chances of claiming the title just yet because with victory on Saturday United will go level on points with City.
City are considered serious title challengers this season so if United can then be on level points with them after 11 games why are Manchester United out of the title conversation?
Despite the possibility of level on points with City after Saturday’s fixture bookmakers are not having none of it.
Sky Bet are currently offering odds of 33/1 for Manchester United to lift the league title after the 38 Premier League games.
William Hill are offering wider odds than 33/1. At this stage of the season William Hill are offering odds of 40/1 for United to win the league.
The biggest odds you can get at the minute are 50/1 and this is being offered by SpreadEx.
Despite bookmakers offering these odds, what do you think about United’s title chances? Can they win it or is there not a chance at all for the glory days to return to Old Trafford?
