Is this the resurgence of Arsenal?

arsenal resurgence

In recent weeks, Arsenal fans have seen an upturn in results from their team after a tough start to the season which had many worrying about which way the club was heading and questions were beginning to be asked about whether Mikel Arteta was the man to lead Arsenal back to the level of what they are widely known for.

The recent improvement in form of the Gunners has got many football fans and people in the game talking. Arsenal fans hope this continuation with their club can be spoken about in a positive way which in recent times hasn’t always been the case, especially under Arteta.

This season is the first season in 20 that Arsenal have failed to qualify for any type of European football.

Without the availability of European football, Arsenal struggled to attract the ‘big’ named players in the summer transfer window.

This resulted in them bringing in players for the future instead of proven players at the top level.

The arrivals of Nuno Tavares from Benfica, Sambi Lokonga from Anderlecht, Ben White from Brighton, Martin Odegaard from Real Madrid after his loan spell at the Gunners, Aaron Ramsdale from Sheffield United and Takehiro Tomiyasu from Bologna on deadline day and they have helped add to the squad in both the starting 11 and also to the options which Arteta has from the bench.

The arrival of these 6 players saw Arsenals spending rise above the £100M mark but however arrivals were not seen as the priority, it was the departures of players on big wages which were no longer in Arteta’s plans these included Matteo Guendouzi, Joe Willock and Willian all 3 of these players and more departed the Emirates for new challenges.

Transfers are not the main talking point at Arsenal at the minute, instead, it is the much-improved quality and results that have seen a negative mindset surrounding the fans turn into a positive one.

Arsenal began the 21/22 season with 3 successive defeats, the first of those came to the hands of newly-promoted Brentford despite Arsenal having suspensions and injuries for the game the newly-promoted side were expected to be beaten by Arsenal.

But this was not the case Brentford won 2-0 in front of a rocking Brentford Community Stadium with goals from Sergi Canos and Christian Norgaard.

Arsenal then followed up this result by hosting London rivals Chelsea in a game that saw Arsenal suffer a 2-0 defeat. The game was dominated by the physical presence of Romelu Lukaku who proved to be too strong and clever for the centre half partnership of Rob Holding and Pablo Mari.

Following on from the defeat from the blue side of the capital Arsenal then had the task of travelling to the blue side of Manchester to take on defending champions Manchester City, the game saw Arsenal get battered 5-0 due to playing the the majority of the 90 minutes with 10 men after Granit Xhaka saw red.

After 3 back to back defeats Arsenal was 2nd bottom of the league on 0 points after conceding 9 goals without scoring.

Arsenal returned after the international break with the squad back to what may have been seen as full strength after the arrival of players such as Pierre Emerick Aubameyang.

In the first game back after the break, Norwich travelled to the Emirates in which some joked and called a relegation 6 pointer! This game saw the debut of Aaron Ramsdale after replacing German goalkeeper Bernd Leno and on the Englishman’s debut Arsenal registered their first clean sheet in the Premier League this season. Arsenal went on to win the game 1-0 and they were off the mark in terms of wins.

Following on from the Norwich fixture Arsenal travelled to Turf Moor to play Burnley who were yet to win a game.

The summer arrival, Martin Odegaard helped Arsenal gain victory over the Clarets with a free-kick from 25 yards out which found its way past Nick Pope. This was now 6 points from a possible 6 for Arsenal but bigger and tougher things were yet to come.

This test came in their most recent match against North London rivals Tottenham in front of a home crowd. This game was the battle of the inform (Arsenal) and out of form (Tottenham) and the inform side came out on top with Arsenal winning 3-1. Arsenal‘s academy prospects Bukayo Saka and Emile Smith Rowe were the star men in the game and showed the quality in which they possess.

Both managed to grab a goal each and help Arsenal to victory against their rivals. Aubameyang also got on the scoresheet for the 2nd time in 3 games and as an Arsenal fan seeing the return to form of your star man can only help increase your confidence and belief in your side.

As a result of 3 losses and 3 wins Arsenal currently sit in 10th place but seem to have turned a corner in regards of performances and in the words of Sky sports Pundit Gary Neville ‘Arsenal have started to look like a proper team’ and many believe this is due to the mixture of new signings and youth within the Arsenal starting 11.

There’s no debating the vast improvement of Arsenal but why is it? Is it the return of injured players? Is it the influence of the new signings to the starting 11 such as Aaron Ramsdale and Ben White? Or is the coaching of Arteta that is starting to show? Who knows but Arsenal fans can only hope that it continues.

Even the most optimistic Arsenal fans aren’t getting carried away with the form of their side at the moment because due to recent experiences they know not only football but what their side is capable of doing.

Arsenal look to carry on their impressive form when they travel to play and also inform Brighton who have only suffered 1 defeat so far this season, this game can be watched live on Sky sports Saturday Night Football with the game starting at 5:30pm.
