Chelsea Title Ambitions
This year’s start of the Premier League has been called by fans up and down the country and many pundits such as Gary Neville ‘The best start to a Premier League seen for many years if not ever’ and it’s hard to disagree.
The quality of the football on show so far this season has been a level above previous seasons and the return of fans has added to the exciting start.
Many teams have started the season and showcased that they are capable of going all the way, Manchester City being one of those teams with the addition of Jack Grealish from Aston Villa for £100M has improved the already world-class options at Pep’s disposal.
On the other side of the city of Manchester, Manchester United have also improved 10 fold by adding club legend Cristiano Ronaldo from Juventus, Raphael Varane from Spanish giants Real Madrid and Jadon Sancho from German side Borussia Dortmund despite a few people in the game still having their questions about United, any team with Ronaldo will be there or thereabouts at the end of the season.
But the standout team of the season so far for many is Chelsea under the management of Thomas Tuchel the improvements are there for all to see, in his 24 Premier League games as boss at the bridge he has managed an impressive 15 win 6 draws and 3 losses.
Chelsea in the transfer window spent well and efficiently bringing in former player Romelu Lukaku from Inter Milan for a fee round £95M, Lukaku since leaving Manchester for Milan has put his name up there in the same conversation such as Harry Kane and Robert Lewandowski when talking about the best number 9s in world football.
One thing Lukaku is guaranteed to bring to Chelsea is goals wherever Lukaku has been in his career he has scored goals whether that be in England at Everton, Manchester United or even West Brom.
Also, the arrival of the new number 9 takes the pressure off the likes of Timo Werner to score goals which he has found hard to do since switching German football for the Premier League.
Many believe the arrival of Romelu Lukaku will give Chelsea enough quality to win the league come the end of the season and with the squad, they have especially the attacking options it is hard to argue with this.
Despite adding to the top of the field Chelsea have improved defensively with the rapid improvements of players such as Andres Christsen and Antonio Rudiger, who arguably have been the best centre half partnership since the arrival of Tuchel and the departure of Frank Lampard.
As well as improving what was already at the club before his arrival, Tuchel also brought in serial winner Thiago Silva on a free transfer from Paris Saint Germain who knows exactly what it takes to be successful at the highest level in the game and at the age of 36 he looks better than ever.
As a result of the improvements made in the defence, Chelsea lead the way of all clubs in the top 5 European leagues for clean sheets under Thomas Tuchel, they have managed a total of 23 clean sheets.
This is title-winning form and adding the huge amount of goals that Lukaku will bring is a recipe for success.
So far this season the reigning Champions League and Super Cup winners have yet to taste defeat in any competition they have played in.
They began their league campaign off with a comfortable 3-0 victory at Stamford Bridge in front of a home crowd against a Patrick Viera lead Crystal Palace side.
This game saw a long-range effort from around 30 yards out by the right foot academy graduate Trevoh Chalobah rocket into the side netting which resulted in Chalobah being forced into tears during his celebration because of the hard work he has put into to finally get into the Chelsea side.
Chelsea then made their way across London to the Emirates stadium to face rivals Arsenal in a game that saw the 2nd debut of Lukau and he didn’t disappoint.
He bullied and humiliated the Arsenal defence for the entirety of the game by using his sheer physical strength and power.
He went on to score a goal in this game and play a vital part in the 2nd goal which saw Reece James smash the ball home. The derby couldn’t have been easier for Tuchels men, they won comfortably 2-0.
Next up for the blues was a trip to Merseyside to face title rivals Liverpool, many believed this was a game to show where both clubs were at in terms of title aspirations.
The game ended 1-1 with goals from German prospect Kai Havertz and Mohammed Salah. But despite a draw being the final result at Anfield many people who watched the game believed Chelsea were unlucky to not come away with all 3 points even though they played the whole of the second half with a man less after Reece James saw red after preventing a certain goal with his hand on the goal line.
Chelsea still had the majority of the ball and created better opportunities out of the 2 sides. After the trip to Merseyside, it was back to Stamford Bridge for their next fixture which saw Aston Villa as the visitors.
The game ended 3-0 to Chelsea in a game in which many fans believe was their worst performance this season but 3 points are 3 points and a sign of a successful team is winning when you don’t play well and that’s exactly what they did on this day.
Lukaku grabbed his 2nd and 3rd goals in the game to ensure the victory. Up next was the beginning of their Champions League defence which saw Zenit St Petersburg make the trip from Russia to London on a Tuesday evening, the game was dominated by Chelsea but they failed to find the breakthrough past a strong and stubborn defensive set-up until … who else but the main man Lukaku opened the scoring with the use of his head off a pinpoint Cesar Azpilicueta cross and this turned out to be the winning goal.
Most recently Chelsea came up against a Tottenham team under new management and away from home they struggled to play the style of football in the first 45 minutes in which Tuchel has been famous for, since his arrival, this was due to the high pressure and in your face tactic set by Nuno Espirito Santo.
However in the 2nd half this wasn’t the case and was the complete opposite, showing his coaching ability Tuchel identified the problem and made a change which saw Mason Mount withdrawn and replaced by N’golo Kante this gave Chelsea extra energy and as a result, they showed what they were capable off and blew Tottenham side scoring 3 goals in the second half to win 3-0.
So after their impressive start to the season, scoring 14 goals and conceding 1 in all competitions it is hard to doubt and look past this Chelsea side when thinking about Premier league winners.
888sport are offering a price of 2/1 for Chelsea to win the league this season.
Skybet are also offering odds of nearly 2/1 for Chelsea to lift the title this year behind the front runners Man City at a price of 13/8.
What do you think? Could Tuchel bring back the glory days to Chelsea? Can he win the Champions League and premier league in back to back seasons?
