Al Ittihad’s De Jong Interest: Just Rumours or Something More?

A leading Saudi Arabian football official has confirmed that Frenkie de Jong is a regular topic of discussion at Al Ittihad as they explore potential transfer targets. De Jong’s future at Barcelona is uncertain, with the midfielder nearing the final year of his contract. The Catalan club are known to be reluctant to let players approach free agency without agreeing new terms, and have reportedly threatened those who do so with being sidelined.

De Jong’s Barcelona career has yet to fully regain momentum following a serious ankle injury that hampered his last season, prevented him from playing in Euro 2024, and delayed his start to the current campaign. Despite captaining the team in his two La Liga starts this season, his overall game time has been limited. His contract expires in 2026, and given Barcelona’s well-documented financial difficulties, they have previously considered him a sellable asset. Indeed, they agreed a transfer with Manchester United in the summer of 2022, but the move ultimately fell through.

This ongoing uncertainty has led to speculation about his next move, with the Saudi Pro League a potential destination for a player of his calibre, particularly given the substantial salaries on offer.

Ramon Planes, Al Ittihad’s director of football and former Barcelona executive, acknowledged the club’s interest in De Jong. Speaking to Esports COPE, he said, “These conversations to find out how the market is are frequent. He is very happy in Barcelona, he has adapted, and it is not easy for a player to leave a club like Barca when things are going well. I always have to ask about players and market possibilities.”

While this doesn’t necessarily indicate an imminent bid for De Jong, it does confirm that Al Ittihad are actively monitoring the situation and exploring their options. They are keeping abreast of potential transfer opportunities.

Similar to De Jong, Kevin De Bruyne, whose Manchester City contract has less than six months to run, has been strongly linked with the Saudi Pro League. However, recent reports suggest that the veteran Belgian is hoping to secure a new contract with City.
